Gin Rummy

2 PLAYERS ~20 MIN FIRST TO 100

Gin Rummy is a two-player card game of ten-card hands and one question every turn: is this hand close enough to end? Draw and discard to build runs and sets, watch what your opponent takes, and knock when your leftovers are small enough to survive being counted. Knock too early and you get undercut; knock too late and they go gin. A match runs to 100 points.

How a turn works

Draw

Take the top of the stock, or the card your opponent just threw away — which tells them something about your hand.

Discard

Throw one card face up. Ten cards in, ten cards out; the hand you keep is the one you are betting on.

Knock

End the hand when your unmatched cards total 10 or less. Both hands are counted, and the difference is your score.

Common questions

Can I play Gin Rummy on NowPlay?

Yes, and it is free. Practise against a bot, join the queue to play another person, or play a move at a time, hours apart. A one-hand tutorial teaches the three decisions in a turn, and there is a five-rung ladder (four single hands, then a full game to 100) and a set of achievements.

What is the knock threshold in Gin Rummy?

Ten, counted over whatever will not fit into a meld — an ace is 1, a picture card is 10, everything else is its number. So a hand carrying a king cannot knock at all until the king goes, and a hand carrying a 4 and a 6 is exactly at the line. Reaching zero is gin, worth a 25-point bonus and, more usefully, immunity from the lay-off.

Can an ace be high in a run?

No. Aces are low, so A-2-3 of a suit is a run and Q-K-A is not. An ace counts 1 as deadwood, which makes it a cheap card to hold and a poor one to build runs around.

What is an undercut?

Ending the hand with more deadwood than the player you just beat to the knock. If their count is equal to or lower than yours after they lay off, they score the difference plus 25 and you score nothing — which is why knocking is a decision rather than a reflex.

What happens if nobody knocks in Gin Rummy?

The hand is void when the stock is down to two cards and nobody has knocked: nobody scores, and the same player deals again. Three void hands in a row end the whole match on the score as it stands — the higher score wins, and level scores are a draw.

How long does a game of Gin Rummy take?

A single hand takes a couple of minutes. A match runs to 100 points, which is usually four to ten hands, so 10 to 20 minutes in total. Played as a single hand, the game is over when the hand is: whoever scored its points wins, and a void hand is a draw.

Is Gin Rummy a game of skill or luck?

Both, and the split is the reason it has lasted. A single hand can be decided by the deal; a match to 100 is decided by which player reads the discards better and knocks at the right moment. That is also why it rates well — a rating over many matches measures the part that is skill.
